Indigenous Literacy Day 2022

Wednesday 7 September was Australia’s Indigenous Literacy Day 2022, a day where Indigenous children’s literacy outcomes are recognised and celebrated. The annual celebration features Aboriginal languages, stories and culture as a reminder of the importance of a connection to language, heritage and literacy for Indigenous communities.

As a part of the ongoing connection to the schools within our Muru Bulbi AECG and to mark Indigenous Literacy Day. Gorokan High School, Northlakes High School and Lake Munmorah High School held its first annual Literacy Day at Morrie Breen Oval. Students were given a range of literacy activities, many of which held a cultural aspect and cultural language with the approval of the Darkinjung Lands Council.

Thank you to Mr Glachan (GHS), Ms Ewer (NHS) and Mr Quigg (LMHS) for organising the event. A special mention to our GHS Aboriginal Education team for their organisation of the day and activities: Mr Blackburn, Mr Mazzetti, Mr Bennett, Ms Murray, Ms Hancock and Ms Carter. To our Year 10 ALPs and Junior AECG representatives who did a wonderful job running all the activities. Thank you Mr Crotty (NHS) for the video of the day. All students were very engaged.

Congratulations to the first-place winners, Gorokan High School's Year 7 students: Hayden R, Bailey G, Ziggy I and Heath P.
