Opens Girls Football

Open Girls Football: Gorokan High School vs Wadalba Community School

The match started with great energy as both teams were contesting for possession of the ball. Our defence was put under pressure early, but with smart footballers we were able to clear the danger. Kirra W. and Ella F. were extremely strong, mopping up the loose balls quickly and chasing and tackling everything that came their way! After a few chances at each end and some good saves by Maykayla Y., it was Wadalba to strike first.

Our girls continued to work hard and apply pressure to eliminate the deficit, however, with taking risks and having numbers forward by great opportunities created by Caitlin D. and Lily N. up front, it opened up a few opportunities at the other end and Wadalba were able to capitalise on the counter-attack. The half-time score 3-0.

The girls returned to the field for the second half motivated to impact the game and give it everything they had. After some great build-up play where Kaitlyn W. played a through-ball in for Emma V., just enough to entice the goalkeeper to a strong challenge, Emma V. with the assist as Lillie N. scored for Gorokan!

Wadalba pressed on to wear down our defence as we continued to hassle them around the box and not making it easy for them with a never-say-die attitude. In the end, Wadalba scored a further two goals with some great attacking play.

With some great performances by all involved, the player of the match goes to Ella F. She played an outstanding role in defence and made life very difficult for the opposition strikers as she was always in their way!

Well done to all players for playing the game competitively, skilfully and never giving up on each other.

Ms Laksa and Mr Finlayson

Open Boys Cricket

Open Boys Cricket Against Wadalba Community School at Harry Moore Oval 9th March 2021:

Wadalba had sent us into bat and it looked like a good decision when they picked up an early wicket. With nine players in the field, captain Thomas A (36) and Hashit S (17) took advantage and steadied the ship with their 61 run partnership. Four wickets in quick succession slowed the run rate down whilst Declan T (46*) remained strong at the other end. Gorokan HS finishing 6-142 off 30 overs. With a very respectful total, it was important that we got off to a good start to build the pressure. Openers Thomas A (2-4) and Declan T (2-2) applied the pressure whilst picking up wickets early to put us in a great position. An absolute screamer of a catch from Luke V being a highlight of the boys' fielding performance. Siddharth R (2-5) and Xander S (2-3) were also excellent contributors with the ball. Wadalba ended up all out for 28.

A comprehensive win, played in good spirit, with respect of each other. The opposition and players were encouraging each other in doing their personal best. We move on in the knockout competition to play against Kincumber.

Well done Gorokan High School!

Red Tree Theatre

Thirteen The Musical

On Sunday 14th February, Mrs Costa and I attended a musical theatre production at the new Red Tree Theatre at Tuggerah. The production was Thirteen The Musical. Three of the cast members are/were students of GHS. Our current Year 12 student Riley Felton and two Year 12 students of 2020, Declan Gray and Courtney-Jade Buckley. This was an amazing performance by all three (and the rest of the cast). The performances were faultless and they really looked as though they enjoyed every minute of it. We were so proud of all three and look forward to watching them in any future performances. They have one more show at the Red Tree Theatre on Thursday 18th February at 7.00pm. If you are looking for an entertaining few hours, I would recommend going along to watch the Manhattan Cast one last time. These are three performers we need to keep an eye on in the future.

Parents, carers and students of year 7.

Students are participating in a compulsory beach safety program throughout Week 8 that is designed to improve the understanding and awareness of risks that are associated with water activities and provide strategies to increase their personal safety and the safety of others.

Due to our close proximity to a variety of waterways, the school has identified the need to offer students the opportunity to improve their water and beach safety.

Students have been divided into groups and will attend one day at Toowoon Bay to engage in the program. Students in attendance are encouraged to engage in the water-based activities, however, non-swimmers or students lacking the confidence to participate in these types of learning activities do have the option of observing.

The groups and dates are as follows:

P & C – Monday the 30th of November I & Y – Tuesday the 1st of December

G & S – Wednesday the 2nd of December R & B – Friday the 4th of December

This training also includes components of the OSSA award to allow students to selected surfing as a school sport in future years. Students will need to bring their own lunch, however, the surf club kiosk can also be accessed.

Students are to arrive at school at normal time and will meet in the New Hall. Students will then catch the bus to and from the venue and there is no cost associated with the day.

Please wear your PE uniform, bring a change of clothes to wear in the water and a towel. Remember to be sun safe by wearing sunscreen and a hat.

We look forward to having an awesome time learning how to be safe beach goers!

Energy Drinks at schools

Energy Drinks

We have long had issues with energy drinks and their consumption in school grounds. Their side and health effects are considerable and not something we can as a school community condone or support. As a Department of Education school, we are bound by the Nutrition guidelines set out for canteens and these type of drinks fall well outside respective guidelines with particular references to the amount of sugar (up to 10-12 teaspoons in a single can) and caffeine (contained in such beverages). Therefore, if a child comes onto school grounds in possession or drinking an energy drink they will be directed to dispose of it responsibly in a bin provided or confiscated. If you are aware of your child’s taste for such drinks could you please stress with them that they cannot be consumed at school and they will be asked to dispose of them appropriately or confiscated.

Vaping in schools

Vaping

We have become aware of some incidents in the school concerning behaviour of Vaping. There are a number of issues related to this practice including the associated effects on individuals and those around them. As a school community we are infinitely aware of the danger this issue presents to young people due to their contents of nicotine, chemical flavourings and in some cases THC or even more sinister substances. When dealing with specific individuals around any such issue we will initially approach the topic from a welfare and harm minimisation approach in cooperation with parents/carers. There will be placement of the student on a behaviour monitoring card (Level 2/3) and the device will also be confiscated.

The Whitecard course is a compulsory course for all students who would like to do work experience or who in the future would like to obtain a trade in the Construction Industry. It is also essential for students who have chosen to study Construction for Year 11. The White card course is highly regarded amongst many employers as it educates participants about workplace safety.

GHS students attended the Whitecard course on October 28th. All students who attended were successful in gaining their Workplace Health and Safety (Whitecard) qualification.

We hope to hold another Whitecard course later this term for any students who have not already completed the course.

Year 10 2021 Central Australia Fundraiser - October 31st

Have you felt like something has been missing in 2020?  Has there been an empty hole in your life that you haven't been able to fill?  Are you sick of 2020 and would like to hear something other than bad news?   Well then I have some good news for you!

Bunnings Sausage Sizzles are back!

Our Year 9 cohort has the opportunity to raise some funds for the Central Australia excursion in 2021.  Come down to Lakehaven Bunnings on Saturday October 31st (between 9am and 4pm) for a snag and an ice cold drink served up by our very own students and staff!  This will be a fantastic opportunity to support our GHS families, whilst also scratching the itch for a Bunnings sausage sanga you didn't know you had.

Looking forward to seeing you all there on the 31st!

This was part of the Start Up Business Start pItch Competition.  Congraduations team.... the future looks bright!

It is with sadness that we inform the GHS community of the sudden passing of Ross Smith, a proud Aboriginal man and valued staff member.  Ross inspired many of our students through Didge, Art and being a strong role model.  Ross has impacted schools across Muru Buildi AECG and his art work is proudly on display.  Our thoughts are with his family and close friends at this time and we have support at school available for those students and staff who have been impacted by this news.  There will be an opportunity in the future to celebrate the legacy Ross leaves at GHS and as a mark of respect, his students lowered our Aboriginal flag to half mast today.  Ross will be sorely missed.

Year 7 Humanities

Did you know that scientists are thinking of releasing the Giant Triton Snail in the Great Barrier Reef to keep the Crown of Thorns Starfish under control? Year 7 Humanities students do! This was the topic of the article they critically read this week.

Since their return to school, Year 7 Humanities classes have hit the ground running.  Thye have developed a range of skills, especially the ability to critically read.  Critical reading is an effective strategy that allows students to gain a deeper understanding of texts through the extension of their vocabulary, being able to make links between paragraphs and also by thinking about the possibilities beyond the text by making predictions.  This skill is now one that they will have forever and will not doubt serve our Humanities students well as they progress through high school.
