Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is an integrated area of study that provides for the intellectual, social, emotional, physical and spiritual development of students. It involves students learning about and practising ways of maintaining active, healthy lifestyles and improving their health status. It is also concerned with social and scientific understandings about movement, which lead to enhanced movement potential and appreciation of movement in their lives.
All aspects of PDHPE are of relevance to all you people and provide a direct link with study and vocational pathways in the areas of recreational, paramedical, movement and health sciences. Related career opportunities are expanding and gaining recognition throughout the community as legitimate fields of endeavour. The study of PDHPE also supports students as they develop into young adults. The syllabus encourages personal growth, the enhancement of wellbeing and the development of the individual's capacity to take a productive role in society.
The preliminary course studies how people think about health and physical activity, managing personal health and how the body performs movements. These are some of the factors that underpin health and physical activity. The options include First Aid an Fitness Choices.
The HSC course studies Australia's health status and the major issues associated with it, factors affecting performance such as nutrition, recovery, physiology of training, skill development and psychology. The options include Improving Performance and Sports Medicine.

Community and Family Studies
CAFS studies the interdependence and diverse nature of families and communities in Australian society. Contemporary society is characterised by rapid social and technological change, cultural diversity, conflicting values and competitive pressures. Developing understanding about society and living in society requires comprehensive knowledge of its complex nature. Consequently, Community and Family Studies is an interdisciplinary course drawing upon selected components of family studies, sociology, developmental psychology and students' general life experiences. This course focuses on skills in resource management that enable people to function effectively in their everyday lives, in families and communities.
The dynamic nature of this area of study places particular importance on the skills of inquiry and investigation. Research is an integral component of this subject. Students are required to develop and utilise research skills in planning, collecting, recording, interpreting, analysing and presenting as they employ various research methodologies to complete an Independent Research Project (IRP). Community and Family Studies explores life issues that are important to all young people and of equal relevance to female and male students, with the capacity to challenge and extend all students' ability levels.
In the Preliminary Course students study Resource Management (all factors of wellbeing and how to maintain this), Individuals and Groups (how individuals function and create groups and then how groups function and create communities) and Family and Communities (the importance of support networks and positive wellbeing for our families to create strong, functioning communities).
In the HSC Course students study research methodology (the how, what, why, when and where of research), groups in context (the various groups in our society and how they relate and affirm diversity), parenting and caring (the importance of families, parents and carers in society and how to understand rights and responsibilities) and an option component - current cohorts are studying Social Impact of Technology (this relates to how technology is adapting the way we see and function in our world).
